I’m Kate Bolin. I’m 30, originally from Southern California (North Long Beach, to be precise), and now live in Nottingham, England. I moved because I got married to a delightful English geek, and despite miserable weather, no Mexican food, and annoying teenagers, I’m happy here.
I’m a web designer for fun and profit, and I’m happiest when I’m elbows-deep in CSS. Even when it involves making it work for bastard IE. I’m a web standards and accessibility fiend, and, really, despite all the Web 2.0 nonsense running around, I’m still a static-[X]HTML kind of girl. So I’d be great for making your little showcase website, but rubbish implementing your latest social networking project.
I’m astoundingly obsessed with pop culture. Movies, TV shows, books, music, stupid websites on the Internet — I’m all there. I have a deep love for theme parks, especially ghost trains and other dark rides, which is why I’m also obsessed with Disneyland culture. Per week, on average, I see around one new-to-me movie, regularly watch 10 tv shows, read one book, and spend probably 100 hours online (although work really shouldn’t count). If I were male, I’d be a marketing executive’s dream.
I’m also a collecting geek. Not the “wrap it in mylar and lock it away for a million years so that it’s perfect mint condition”, but more of the open the box and pose it in a vaguely perverse position kind of way. I have a large collection of toys, action figures, items out of Kinder Surprises, memorabilia, religious items, and just general nerdy rubbish that I can’t bear to part with. You’ll take my Maneki Neko out of my cold dead hands!
I’ve gotten exceedingly crafty over the past few years, including papercraft (making little models out of paper), sewing, and knitting. I’m not very good at all three, so don’t expect an Etsy store out of me any time soon.
